What superclipping actually looks like from the grandstand

Cars easing off at full throttle to recharge is the most-complained-about thing in Formula 1 this year — what it looks like from a seat, and where to see it best.

Dated on purpose. The 2026 rules have already been amended once, this early in the season, so anything confident about how these cars behave has a shelf life. This piece was written on 24 Jul 2026 and the technical figures in it come from press reporting of the FIA's technical review meetings with the power-unit manufacturers, not from us. Where we are unsure, we say so.

What you are looking at

Superclipping is energy harvesting that happens while the driver is still flat out — usually towards the end of a straight, sometimes through a fast corner. The MGU-K flips briefly into harvest mode, takes energy that would otherwise be driving the rear wheels, and the car gives up a little speed in exchange.

It is not lift-and-coast. Lift-and-coast happens before a corner and looks like a driver being careful. Superclipping happens in the middle of a straight and looks like a driver making a mistake.

Why it reads as wrong

Every instinct a spectator has says that a car on a straight should be accelerating. Watching one shed speed with no corner in sight and no obvious problem breaks that instinct, and fans have been blunt about it all season.

The complaint is not really about the physics. It is that the thing you came to watch — a driver going as fast as the car will go — is interrupted several times a lap by a decision made in a control system.

Where you can actually see it

You need a long straight and a seat with a view of most of it. A stand square onto a braking zone shows you the end of the process and none of it.

The clearest examples on the calendar are the circuits built around big straights. Baku's enormous run along the waterfront, Monza's stretches between chicanes, Shanghai's back straight into the tight hairpin, and Las Vegas down the boulevard all give you enough distance to watch a car ease, recover and then use it again.

The circuits where you will barely notice it are the flowing ones. Lusail's sequence of medium-speed corners and Suzuka's first sector give the car recovery opportunities in places that do not look like recovery.

It has already been tuned once

The teams agreed a package of changes in April 2026 aimed squarely at this. As reported, maximum recharge dropped from 8 MJ to 7 MJ, the target superclip duration was set at two to four seconds per lap, and peak superclip power went up from 250 kW to 350 kW — a shorter, harder burst instead of a long soft one.

So if you attended early in the season and again later, you were watching two slightly different rule sets. That is unusual, and it is worth knowing before you compare notes with someone who went to a different round.

Is it worth choosing a race around?

Probably not on its own. If you find the whole idea objectionable, a slow street circuit will annoy you least, because there is nowhere to deploy and nowhere to harvest at speed.

If you are curious rather than annoyed, pick a long-straight circuit and buy a seat with distance in front of it. It is one of the few genuinely new things to watch for in the sport this year, and television does a poor job of showing it.

Either way the decision that matters more is still grandstand or general admission, because that one shapes the entire weekend rather than one detail of it.

There is a listening version of this too. The engine note through a superclip does not do what your ear expects on a straight, and once you have noticed the change in tone you start picking it up at parts of the circuit where you cannot see the cars at all. That is a genuinely new thing to have at a race, and one of the few respects in which being there beats watching at home this year.
