What happened

For the thousands of fans packed into the Zandvoort dunes, the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix was over before it had truly begun. Less than a single lap into what was the circuit's farewell to the Formula 1 calendar, the home hero Max Verstappen was a passenger in a wrecked Red Bull, bringing out a red flag and silencing the orange-clad crowd. On a track still greasy from pre-race rain, Verstappen lost control through the final banked corner, spinning his car into the barriers and ending his race in a shower of debris. The chaos wasn't limited to retirements. Several drivers were hit with penalties that shuffled the final order. According to a post-race report from GPFans.com, Liam Lawson received a ten-second penalty for a yellow flag infringement, though he still managed to salvage a seventh-place finish. Arvid Lindblad and Franco Colapinto also received drive-through penalties for similar offences during the race.

Behind Norris's commanding victory, Kimi Antonelli held on for a strong second place, extending his championship lead. George Russell completed the podium in third, making it a double-podium finish for Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finished a close fourth and fifth respectively for Ferrari, followed by Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren. Liam Lawson, Nico Hülkenberg, Fernando Alonso, and Pierre Gasly rounded out the top ten and the points-paying positions.

Zandvoort's Farewell

The event marked the end of an era, with the Dutch Grand Prix not scheduled to appear on the 2027 calendar. While the circuit’s tight, old-school layout and passionate crowd provided a unique atmosphere, its suitability for modern F1 cars has been a point of debate. For Lando Norris and McLaren, it was a triumphant hat-trick of victories at the circuit, sending Zandvoort off in style. But for the thousands of fans who came to cheer their local hero, the lasting image will be of Verstappen’s Red Bull being cleared from the track, a premature end to the final dance in the dunes.
