What happened
The 2026 Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika was a race of historic achievements and high-profile attritions, ultimately defined by a landmark 1-2-3-4 finish for Aprilia. Marco Bezzecchi stormed to a much-needed victory, his first since Mugello, but the drama unfolded all the way down the field, with four riders failing to finish and the championship lead once again changing hands.
Bezzecchi’s win was hard-fought, requiring him to hunt down a heroic Raul Fernandez. Fernandez, riding for the Trackhouse Racing satellite team, led for the first 18 laps despite racing with two broken fingers sustained in a tangle with Bezzecchi during Saturday's Sprint race. According to race reports, Bezzecchi made the decisive move on lap 19 of the 27-lap contest, quickly building a gap and crossing the line over four seconds clear. The victory also marked the 300th win for an Italian rider in the premier class.
Jorge Martin completed the all-Aprilia podium in third place, a result that propelled him back to the top of the championship standings by a slim two-point margin over Marc Marquez. The Aprilia dominance was sealed by Ai Ogura, who fought his way to fourth, completing an unprecedented top-four lockout for the Noale factory.
A Brutal Day for Key Contenders
While Aprilia celebrated, several other big names saw their race end prematurely. According to Autocar India's race report, last year's winner Fermin Aldeguer crashed out at Turn 16 on the second lap, marking his fourth crash of the weekend. It was later confirmed the crash resulted in a fractured right hand requiring surgery. He was soon joined on the sidelines by Jack Miller and, significantly, Francesco Bagnaia, who retired after separate incidents on lap 5. The string of retirements was completed by wildcard Toprak Razgatlioglu, who pulled into the pits on lap 8 due to a lack of feeling in his right shoulder following a heavy crash in practice.
Tyre Pressures and Championship Battles
The theme of tyre pressure management, which had already decided the Sprint race outcome, continued to be a major talking point. In the Grand Prix, Pedro Acosta was notably affected, seen deliberately swapping positions with Marc Marquez to avoid a penalty for running his front tyre below the minimum pressure. The constant battling ultimately cost him a shot at fourth place, though he still finished as the top non-Aprilia rider in fifth.
Marc Marquez, who briefly took the championship lead after winning the Sprint, had to settle for a damage-limitation ride to sixth place. This was the first time the Ducati rider had finished a Sunday Grand Prix at Mandalika, a track where he has historically struggled. The result leaves him just two points adrift of Martin, essentially resetting the title fight to where it was before the weekend began.
For those watching the action from the grandstands overlooking the fast, flowing corners of the Mandalika circuit, the constant shuffling and on-track drama provided a spectacle. The circuit's challenging nature, especially in the heat and humidity, clearly played a role in both the tyre management puzzle and the high attrition rate, a factor to consider for anyone planning to attend a future race here, as detailed on our dedicated Mandalika circuit page.
With the championship battle so finely poised and Aprilia demonstrating such commanding form, the Indonesian Grand Prix has set the stage for a tense run-in to the end of the season. Martin may have the leader's jersey, but with Marquez in close pursuit and Bezzecchi still mathematically in the hunt, the pressure is on as the paddock heads to Phillip Island.
