Historic info Bahrain
The Kingdom of Bahrain signed a long term agreement with Bernie Ecclestone to host a round of the FIA Formula One World Championship on the 14th September 2002. Just like the other new generation of Formula 1 circuits, Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) was designed by Hermann Tilke. The Bahrain F1l Circuit was opened in 2004. The inaugural Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix race, held in the same year, was the 1st Formula 1 Grand Prix race in the Middle-East. Also the 1st Formula BMW World Final was hosted on the Bahrain International Circuit.
The built was suggested by Crown Prince Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. The Crown Prince is the president of the Bahrain Motor Federation. TRL was responsible for the built, lead by Patrick Brogan. Work started in late 2002 and the circuit was completed in time for the first Bahrein F1 Grand Prix in March 2004. Race organizers were worried that the circuit wouldn't be complete in time, and asked for the inaugural Bahrain Grand Prix to take place in 2005 instead. However, Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone refused this request. In the end, the circuit was not quite fully complete, but was good enough for the grand prix to go ahead.
Bahrain F1 circuit posed a unique problem. Positioned in the middle of a desert, there were worries that sand would blow onto the circuit and disrupt the race. This problem was solved by spraying an adhesive on the sand around the track. In 2007 the Bahrain International Circuit was the 1st Grand Prix circuit to receive the FIA Institute Center of Excellence Price. This was given for excellent safety and medical facilities at the circuit. In 2009 it was announced that a new piece of land would be constructed next to the circuit with a business center, entertainment and educational space. With a value of UDS 2 billion it is one of the biggest investment programs in Bahrain of the last 5 years.
